10 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Water Softener

Buying a watersoftenerpros.com/blog/water-softener-lease-vs-buy/?utm_source=internal&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=water-softener-lease-vs-buy”>watersoftenerpros.com/blog/water-softener-red-flags-to-avoid/?utm_source=internal&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=water-softener-red-flags-to-avoid”>water softener is a significant home investment — and in Northern Utah, where water hardness routinely runs between 12 and 25+ grains per gallon (GPG), it’s a decision most homeowners don’t regret. What they do regret is buying the wrong system, paying too much, or finding out after the fact that the company they chose doesn’t back up their product.

Before you hand over any money or sign anything, here are the 10 questions you should be asking every water softener company you talk to.

1. What’s My Actual Water Hardness — and How Do You Know?

Any company worth hiring should be able to tell you the estimated hardness of your water before recommending a system. In Utah, hardness varies significantly by city and even by neighborhood. Salt Lake City typically runs 12–18 GPG. Utah Valley can hit 15–25 GPG. Cities like Eagle Mountain, Herriman, and East Bountiful are known for especially hard water.

A good company will reference local municipality water quality reports or help you get an accurate reading. If someone recommends a system without asking about your water hardness first, that’s a red flag.

2. Is This System the Right Size for My Home?

Water softener capacity is measured in grains — how many grains of hardness the system can remove between regeneration cycles. An undersized softener will regenerate too often, wasting salt and water. An oversized one may sit idle too long between cycles, reducing efficiency.

Sizing depends on your household size, daily water usage, and your local water hardness. For harder areas like Eagle Mountain or Herriman, sizing up is often the right call. Ask the company how they calculated their recommendation — if they can’t explain it clearly, that’s a problem.

3. Does the System Use Metered or Timer-Based Regeneration?

This matters more than most buyers realize. Timer-based systems regenerate on a fixed schedule — whether you’ve used the capacity or not. Metered (on-demand) systems track actual water usage and only regenerate when necessary. Metered systems are more efficient and better suited to real-world household water patterns.

At Water Softener Pros, we only install metered regeneration systems. It’s the smarter design, and it saves you salt and water over time.

4. What Brand of Control Valve Does the System Use?

The control valve is the brain of the softener — it manages regeneration cycles and water flow. Cheap imported valves are common in budget systems and are a frequent source of problems down the road. Ask specifically what brand of valve is used and whether parts are readily available if something needs repair.

Water Softener Pros installs American-made Clack control valves on every system — a gold standard in the residential water treatment industry, known for reliability and long service life.

5. What’s the All-In, Installed Price?

Sticker price on a softener is meaningless without knowing what installation costs. Some companies advertise low equipment prices and then tack on labor, fittings, bypass valves, and other fees at install. Ask for the total installed price — parts, labor, everything — before agreeing to anything.

Water Softener Pros posts all pricing publicly. Our Essential Softener starts at $1,550 installed for a 48K grain system. Our Plus Softener starts at $1,750 installed. No surprises at the door, and no payment is collected until the installation is complete. For a full breakdown of what you get at each price point, see our Utah water softener cost guide.

6. Will You Send a Salesperson to My Home?

In-home sales visits are a well-known pressure tactic in the water softener industry. A salesperson shows up, runs a dramatic hard water demonstration, and pushes you toward a decision before you’ve had time to think. Some companies won’t even quote a price until someone’s sitting in your living room.

We don’t do that. Water Softener Pros has no salespeople. Pricing is posted online. You choose what you want, on your timeline, with no one pressuring you at your kitchen table.

7. What Are the Space and Installation Requirements?

Not every home installs the same way. Standard softener systems need roughly 16″ x 26″ of floor space (or 18″ x 32″ for larger units), access to the main water line or an existing soft-water loop, a 110V electrical outlet nearby, and access to a floor drain or drain line for the brine discharge.

Ask the company upfront whether your home has a pre-plumbed soft-water loop. If it does, installation is straightforward. If it doesn’t, ask how they handle it. Also ask whether the cold water at your kitchen sink will be softened — many homes with a loop intentionally leave kitchen cold, refrigerator water, and attached exterior faucets on hard water, which is common practice due to sodium intake considerations.

8. What Type of Salt Should I Use — and How Much Will I Go Through?

Salt pellets are the recommended choice — they dissolve more cleanly than rock salt or crystals and cause fewer bridging issues in the brine tank. Ask the company to give you a realistic estimate of how often you’ll need to refill the salt tank based on your household size and local water hardness.

In most of Water Softener Pros’ service areas, a family of four typically fills the salt tank two to three times per year. That’s a manageable cost for the long-term benefits of soft water. And if you prefer not to add any sodium to your water at all, ask whether the system supports potassium chloride — all of our systems do.

9. Do You Offer Ongoing Service, Salt Delivery, and Filter Changes?

A water softener isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it appliance. Filters need periodic changes, salt needs to be replenished, and occasional service calls happen. Ask whether the company offers ongoing support or whether you’re on your own after installation day.

Water Softener Pros offers salt delivery, filter changes, and ongoing service support — so you’re not left hunting for a random plumber if something comes up years down the line.

10. Should I Add a Reverse Osmosis System or Whole-House Filter?

A water softener handles hardness. It is not a filter or a purifier. Softening exchanges calcium and magnesium for a small amount of sodium (or potassium) — it does not remove chlorine, chloramines, or other contaminants.

If your household wants purified drinking water at the tap, a reverse osmosis (RO) system is worth discussing. Our RO system is $650 installed and delivers water purified to approximately 99.7% when filters and membrane are new. If you’re concerned about chlorine or other chemicals throughout the whole house, a whole-house carbon filter ($450 installed) can address that at the main line.

Ask any company you talk to whether they offer these options and how they’d recommend combining them for your home. For a side-by-side look at what a softener does versus what a filter does, check out our article on water softener vs. filter — which comes first.

One Bonus Question: What Happens If I Have a Problem After Installation?

Ask directly: “If something goes wrong six months after install, who do I call and what does it cost me?” The answer tells you a lot about a company’s confidence in their work and their commitment to standing behind it.
